There are several tricks employed to simulate volume here. The fire is several simple props rotating on the Y axis (Like you couldn't tell) the light beams flashing up from the ground are one prop spinning very fast to give the illusion of random light flashes. The ground fog is a soon to be released prop from Nerd3D. It will be capable of creating the illusion of ground fog of any depth, from any camera angle.
